To many people, the anesthesiologist is a professional whose job is just to put the patient to sleep during surgery or examination. However, their responsibilities go beyond anesthesia. "While the surgeon operates, the anesthesiologist takes care of the patient, maintaining their vital parameters during the operation. During surgery, the anesthesiologist performance begins when they makes the pre-anesthetic visit to the patient, while still in the room, and only ends when the patient has fully recovered from anesthesia or is referred to an intensive care unit", explains Valberto de Oliveira Cavalcante, anesthesiologist at the Hospital 9 de Julho.

According to him, it is the anesthesiologist's role to carry out the treatment of postoperative pain and attend to non-surgical cases in which the patient suffers from chronic pain. To perform these functions, the anesthesiologist Medicine Graduate and, obligatorily, must take a specialization course in Anesthesiology that lasts at least three years and that makes them apt for the practice of the specialty.

"The formation of anesthesiologists is quite eclectic, covering areas such as cardiology, clinical medicine, pulmonology, intensive care, and others, with the sole purpose of making the anesthetic-surgical act as safe as possible for the patient", says Cavalcante.

Hospital Nove de Julho has a very well-prepared team of anesthesiologists and has the most modern equipment. For patients suffering from chronic pain, the hospital also has a Pain and Functional Neurosurgery Center, which offers specialized and multidisciplinary treatment.
