Hyperbaric Chamber

Discover the treatment with pure oxygen

The Nove de Julho Hyperbaric Medicine Service relies on a specialized team and offers comprehensive care to outpatients or inpatients, including critical.

Wounds that will not heal

Hyperbaric Medicine is used for wound healing (acute* or chronic tissue damage**) and fighting infections. When there is not enough oxygen, these injuries evolve as "wounds that will not heal", that is, they will not close, even with proper treatment, within up to six weeks. The treatments, both local and systemic, also fall short when the proper amount of oxygen is not there. The application of hyperbaric oxygen adds up and makes all other measures for the treatment of wounds more efficient.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

That is a therapeutic modality in which the person is subjected to inhalation of pure oxygen at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, inside a hyperbaric chamber. Hospital 9 de Julho has single-patient hyperbaric chambers, capable of treating chronic or acute, scheduled or urgent patients on a full-time basis, including patients in the ICU and under advanced life support.

 What are the indications?

This treatment is indicated for diving accidents, respiratory poisoning from smoke or toxic gases, trauma, infections, and several other clinical problems, including "wounds that will not heal".   How are these wounds?

  • Acute
  • Burns
  • Bone and/or soft tissue trauma
  • Gangrene and other necroses
  • Abscesses, Cellulitis
  • Fournier Syndrome
  • Infection and other postoperative complications
  • Chronic
  • Diabetic feet
  • Chronic extremity ulcers
  • Chronic osteomyelitis
  • Actinic lesions (post-radiotherapy)
  • Chron and ulcerative colitis.

How is the treatment made?

The treatment is carried out in sessions that last between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on patient, age, type of lesion, and phase of treatment.

The patient remains lying down inside the single-patient chamber and breathes the oxygen atmosphere freely, without masks. There are two-way intercoms for direct contact between the healthcare team and the patient. The patient can move freely, assuming positions that are most comfortable. If preferred, the patient can watch TV or sleep, since the chamber environment is very quiet.
